7 Things We Want to See in Project 007

Below is a sample article written about video games:

We know the name; we know the number. And as soon as the gun barrel logo pops up and the music kicks in, we all know we’re in for a wild ride with James Bond.

Considering the immense popularity of N64’s Goldeneye, not to mention the four beloved games released in the early 2000s, you would expect 007 games to be churned out as regularly as Call of Duty. Yet, surprisingly, we haven’t had a proper Bond game since 2010 – unless you count the woeful and poorly-received 007 Legends in 2012.

Still, James Bond remains a hugely popular character even after all this time, and fans worldwide rejoiced when IO Interactive announced their upcoming game, Project 007. Although we’re nowhere near its release date, here are seven things we’re hoping to see when our favorite spy jumps back onto consoles.

001. First and Third-Person

First-person shooters are perfect for games where bullets are sprayed all over the place – and with a license to kill, any Bond game will inevitably involve a fair bit of action. That’s why there have been many FPS Bond games, from Goldeneye to Nightfire.

But action games don’t have to be relegated to first-person shooters. Just look at the Uncharted series or previous Bond adventures like Everything or Nothing or Blood Stone, all of which were adrenaline-fueled third-person action-adventure games.

From what we’ve seen, it’s likely IO Interactive will stick with the tried and tested third-person format that made their Hitman games so successful. One job listing on their website specifically asked for people with “experience working with third-person action games.” This choice makes sense, especially considering they’re creating their own Bond and will be keen to show off the character’s new look.

Nevertheless, for FPS fans who prefer to charge into a sea of bullets, it would be amazing to have the choice to play in either third-person or first-person and switch it up when you like, much like Bethesda did with Skyrim or Rockstar did with Grand Theft Auto V. Sadly, however, I wouldn’t hold your breath for this just yet.

002. Gadgets and Cars

Agent 47 might not have Q-branch to supply him with the type of gadgets Bond gets, but IO Interactive have given him plenty of gadgets to play around with in Hitman 3. That’s why we hope they’ll go even further for Project 007. Micro tasers, key hackers, and explosive rubber ducks ought to be just the tip of the iceberg!

Cars will be newer ground though. Any Bond game worth its salt has a few thrilling levels where you get behind the wheel of an Aston Martin and unleash carnage on the roads. Although this isn’t something we’ve seen much from Agent 47, it’s an important element for any Bond game that needs to be in Project 007 somewhere.

003. Exotic Locations

Miami, Sapienza, Dubai, Paris… Agent 47 jets around the world just as much as 007. That’s why we’re expecting just as many exotic locations. Fortunately, this is one area where IO Interactive is sure to excel.

IO Interactive’s Hitman trilogy has seen some incredible world maps. Stunningly gorgeous to explore and packed with incredible details, their maps are sprawling and boast endless opportunities. With any luck, they’ll inject that same creativity and detail into their upcoming 007 game to create some unforgettable maps.

004. Hitman-Style Versatility

You don’t have to be an expert speedrunner to get through the Hitman games quickly. But what makes them special is the plethora of ways you can pick off targets. Will you poison them, blow them up, snipe them from a window or maybe stab them up close? It adds an extra layer to the games that makes them incessantly replayable.

James Bond has a range of skills just as wide as Agent 47, and we should have the chance to decide precisely how to complete each objective in a similar way, whether it’s beating them to a pulp, using a gadget or taking them out with a single shot – preferably with a one-liner coming shortly afterwards. And with the studio’s CEO Hakan Abran promising Project 007 to be “the ultimate spycraft fantasy,” this aspect is looking very likely.

005. Easter Eggs

By Easter eggs, I mean references – although I wouldn’t put it past Bond knocking someone out with a literal Easter egg and saying something along the lines of, “That’s one way to make an egg-sit…”

IO Interactive faces a lot of pressure from both Hitman and Bond fans alike to make a truly special game. While Easter eggs and references alone by no means make a good game, they can give nods that fans will appreciate. With 25 Bond films and over 50 years of franchise history, there’s plenty to pick from – and many of them would marry well with Hitman. Don’t be surprised to find Q offering Bond an explosive rubber duck.

006. Multiplayer

Sniper Assassin co-op missions in Hitman 2 aside, Hitman games aren’t famous for multiplayer. James Bond games, on the other hand, are. Just think of the hours of fun to be had with your friends on N64 Goldeneye’s multiplayer mode, a tradition that followed in their subsequent games in the early 2000s.

Judging from IO Interactive’s most recent Hitman 3, a multiplayer option where you’re all dropped into a map and expected to shoot each other as many times as possible seems unlikely. However, co-op missions are still a possibility so it’s not completely out of the question yet.

007. To Actually Feel Like Bond

While we hope IO Interactive injects much of what made their Hitman trilogy so successful into Project 007, they need to go that extra mile to make us feel like Bond. Agent 47’s job may be similar to 007’s, but we need the right gameplay, story, and characterization to make this game stand out.

Don’t expect anything quite as campy as Roger Moore’s films though. CEO Hakan Abran has said as much himself, explaining that they’re going for the darker, gritty tone set by Daniel Craig. Although this sounds a little too similar to Hitman, there are additional elements they can include to make it feel more Bond-like: girls, martinis, bombastic music, cars, end-of-the-world plots hatched by grandiose villains, and henchmen with strange biological gimmicks… There’s lots they can include to make it feel unique.

There’s no word yet on when Project 007 will be released, let alone what its final title will be. However, we have high hopes that IO Interactive will live up to the high expectations set by their previous Hitman games and revitalize a game franchise that has laid dormant for far too long.

After all, IO Interactive have got a Midas touch just like Goldfinger – and they have a Golden Joystick Award to prove it!
